He has typically Anglo-Saxon features: a pale complexion, blue eyes and dark hair, worn cut short with a long fringe. Ryan is a presence in most rooms, owing more to the ready spring of his movements and walk as to his physical dimensions. He rarely stands still and is possessed of an energy with an almost nervous quality to it. When engaged in conversation he is able to make and sustain eye contract, but will be making some form of movement, usually with a hand or foot. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Ryan Rose is a young man of action; although possessed with a sharp capacity for rational thought he seems to operate, and make decisions, on the basis of instinct. Ryan joined Starfleet at the age of eighteen with great enthusiasm. Tired of school, of Earth and of himself he was keen to be where the action was; his motivation was more a sense of opportunistic adventure rather than an altruistic desire to serve the public or uphold the principles expressed in the Federation Charter. Ryan has an easy and friendly manner, complimented by traces of his Yorkshire accent. He has been able to make friends and acquaintances with little difficulty. He has however struggled to form lasting friendships and romantic relationships more as a result of his impatience with the world and own egocentricity than any emotional detachment. Indeed, Ryan is in touch emotionally, and often reacts more from intuition and emotion than considered thought. |
|
Strengths | As an Officer, Rose’s strength lies in leadership and the formation and organisation of strategic operations and the tactical operation of a Starship weaponry and equipment. His physical prowess and training make him suited to hand to hand combat and he is skilled with personal weapons. Aboard ship, he is fluent with the Starship systems that concern him and in the field is able to provide some first aid.
Weaknesses | Although his mind is rational and prone to sparks of inspiration, he is unreflective and impatient by character and as such showed little ability in diplomacy, languages or sciences at the Academy.
Ambitions | Ryan is not a man with clear professional ambition; he joined Starfleet very much out of a sense of restlessness, a need to be where the action was. Given his relative success at the Academy, he is presumably minded to progress further up the rank structure, although he has never expressed a wish to sit in the Captain's chair. In a personal sense he would like to marry and father a family in the future.
Hobbies & Interests | Rose is not a man for hobbies, but does play rugby or other field sports when possible, but during postings he is more limited to training. Ryan will read, but prefers an escapade in the holodeck or a couple of drinks with friends or colleagues to the more solitary pursuits.
Likes | Tea, single malt whisky, socialising, camaraderie, inappropriate jokes, classical myths and legends, a good fight, field sports ...
Dislikes | Coffee, sitting still, intellectuals, being patronised, wasting time ...
Linguistic Abilities | Federation Standard |
Personal History
Personal History | Born the second child of Elizabeth and Alexander Rose in York, Ryan had a typical secure middle class childhood. As a young child, Ryan’s days were happy, he spent them playing in the garden or fishing on the holodeck with his father, enjoying meals with his siblings and falling asleep to the sound of his mother’s voice retelling classic Greek and Roman stories. Elizabeth was a lecturer in classics at the University of York and was passionate about ancient history and literature. When he was seven he attended a small private school in York, alongside elder sister Jennifer and eventually younger brother Philip. His education was supplemented by piano lessons, which he did not enjoy and let side in his teens, and several sports, notably rugby in the winter and cricket in the summer. As he matured, Ryan did not excel in school and found he had difficulty focusing on his studies, which were neglected in favour of sports, his social life, holosuites and physical training, his sister Jennifer being a fitness instructor. At the age of sixteen, Ryan spent a summer serving aboard the freighter that his father captained. He was taken with space travel, the vastness of space and the otherness of life on new worlds. With nothing to lose, and a glimpse of what the galaxy had to offer, Ryan applied to Starfleet Academy. The Academy was good for Ryan, in an objective sense at least. Despite appearances Ryan showed aptitude in mathematics, computer science, strategic and tactical studies and personal combat and was therefore channelled into the Marine Corps, as he felt that a career as a science officer would be too dull. As a Cadet he learned discipline and finally applied himself. He discovered talents he was unaware of and grew in confidence. As a cadet, Ryan had a small string of girlfriends; however the only significant relationship he had was with a fellow cadet, Helen Wright. It ended with graduation and postings to opposite ends of the quadrant. The relationship was one of mutual attraction, although by its end it had run its course, both partners having begun to look elsewhere. Helen, a fighter pilot, died in a border skirmish, shot down by friendly fire. News of her death hit Ryan hard, although the relationship was over by this point. Following graduation Rose was posed to the 16th Batallion Expeditionary Force on Calder II where he served with distinction for two years prior to earning promotion. For professional development reasons, Rose requested transfer to a vessel. |
