Main Sickbay

Main Sickbay is the primary diagnosis and treatment area, it briefly comprises of one surgical bed with enhanced sensor cluster, and several standard bio beds. Further integrated with LCARS consoles for the display of relevant information and control of equipment and sensors. The Chief Medical Officer’s Office is also a feature of main sickbay, partitioned from the main area by glass screens; it follows through into a well-equipped medical laboratory.

Chief Medical Officer's Office

The Chief Medical Officer, or the medical officer on duty, has at his/her disposal the small circular glass walled office located between Main Sickbay and the Medical Laboratory. The Office is designed to allow the Chief Medical Officer a relatively quiet place to complete administration, research, interviews, consultations and make communications in relative privacy, without leaving the central axis of sickbay.

The Office is equipped with a desk, guest seating, a large wall mounted display and a desk top display device, in addition to speakers, holographic projectors and other equipment common to sickbay as a whole.

Counseling Service

All StarFleet vessels of a certain size carry a Counselor, the Counselor is an individual trained in psychology, and exists to advise the crew on personal matters. The Counselor is seen as an integral part of both the medical and executive teams. As he/she interviews all crewmembers on a regular basis the Counselor, with the Executive Officer, will often put forward considerations for promotion and commendation to the Commanding Officer.

As the individual responsible for the psychological health of the crew the Counselor conducts interviews and treatment sessions as necessary, with various psychological treatment options at his/her disposal including cognitive behaviour therapy, hypnotism, interview techniques and role play. It is generally assumed that the Counselor should be the first stop with emotional problems.

Emergency Medical Hologram
The Emergency Medical Holograph (EMH) has been standard issue equipment aboard all StarFleet vessels for several years. The EMH has proven essential in emergency medicine. The current model installed aboard the Arizona, is the Mark II. The Mark II, with several upgrades from the Mark I, principally the capability for long term use without degradation, has become an integral part of the medical team.

The Hippocratic Oath

The Hippocratic Oath is the pledge made by all physicians upon entrance into the field, since the 5th Century BC, an adoption of the origional (below) is taken by all StarFleet Medical Officers, it can be summarised in the mantra ‘do no harm’.

"I will keep this Oath and this stipulation; to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, and relieve his necessities if required; to look upon his offspring on the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this Art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation; and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the law of medicine, but no one else.

I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art.

I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by such men as are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and, further, from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves.

Whatever, in connection with my professional practice, or not in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and practice of the Art, respected by all men, in all times. But should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot."
