Personality & Traits
General Overview | Courageous, charming, and chivalrous are three Cs that immediately get attributed to this young gentlemen cadet. His Security/Tactical studies matched with his ambition towards the Command track later in his career have given him the ere of courageousness, to act with devotion and gallantly react with a calm and cool head. Hickory is also very much seen as a chivalrous individual, letting women enter the room before himself and standing up from a table in their company when they intend to disembark. He is always quick to help out and to use his 'ma'ams' and 'sirs' as well as his 'please' and 'thank yous' when interacting with crews. Little can be argued about him being charming with his soft spoken tone, his polite attitude, and warm friendly smile. However, upon a closer examination and beyond face value one can see faults in Cadet Hickory's personality. His chivalrous nature may be more problematic as a sexist attitude towards women than actual chivalry. Growing up on Sigma Iotia, Lauren Hickory was raised on a world where the society was very much like Earth's during the early 1900s to the mid 1900s where women were seen to have more domesticated roles and were given more secretarial duties in a work place environment. Though the Federation and Starfleet have assisted in curving this attitude and outlook on things, he still is quite uncomfortable with women in command or female in the more combat roles such as security. He has the looks of an angel mixed with the mouth of an old sailor, marking a potential wolf in sheep's clothing kind of guy. He is the type to insist that he goes into a dangerous situation as the point person if there are women on his team. Though he can be rash and immature due to his age and inexperience, his heart and motives are often well placed and overtime, his judgment will likely become better. The Cadet needs some actual field experience to better prepare himself for graduation and earning his commission as an officer in Starfleet. While on duty, he takes his job pretty seriously and will be extremely focused when the need arises. However, when he's off duty or on shore leave, you can expect him to be a bit of a practical joker. Cadet Hickory has successfully made it through into his fourth and finale year at Starfleet Academy and has earned himself the opportunity to serve aboard a starship during his senior year as an Under Officer, an opportunity that his Academy advisor and his instructors feel will give him what he needs to be a fine officer. Though he has made it this far and will very likely be graduating and earning his commission rank of ensign in several months, he is not a 'straight A' student by any means. He's a middle of pack Cadet who if not for his passion and charm, would be unnoticeable in a lecture hall. He tries, he puts in the effort, and he asks and answers questions. However, his grades hover between just passing to reasonably comfortable. Technical and Scientific courses are his weakest areas of study, where as things closer to his field of study are his stronger area of academic performance. |

Strengths | ▪ Hand-to-hand – Though boxing is his preferred form of hand-to-hand combat, Ren has been trained in various forms of mixed martial arts and means to deal with armed and unarmed attackers. He's a tournament and trophy winning boxer, but lacks the discipline for excel at the more structured forms of fighting. He does however have great stamina and a muscular weight advantage over potential aggressors. ▪ Organizational skills – Though his frat boy way of living is evident to anyone who swings by his quarters, Ren actually has a good sense of organizational skills and can be quite tidy when it comes to paperwork. This stems from working 'the books' for his step father's business ventures and ensuring the financial profitability of said businesses. ▪ Survivalist – Be it rough terrain or sparse supplies, Ren knows how to live off the land if need be and his Starfleet Survivalist courses have prepared him for roughing it out if need be. He is no stranger to eating grubs and worms for extra protein and in fact welcomes a good traditional Ferengi meal from time to time. |
|
Weaknesses | ▪ Gambling – If there's a way to make profit even if it is not legal, Hickory will undoubtedly find it. This is also true when it comes to casinos and resorts on other worlds. Whether he's on shore leave or can sneak away for a little while, the cadet will sniff out a good casino and place his bets. ▪ Booze – His homework of Sigma Iotia II has had a recent history of prohibition and bootlegging of alcohol. His stepfather, a Ferengi very much a part of circulating alcohol around the 'underground,' Cadet Hickory has been known to hit the bottle of 'the real stuff' every so often. ▪ Stubborn as a mule – When Cadet Hickory is right, he is right, and when he is wrong, he's still right in his own mind. He will refuse to admit being wrong or mistaken. He will sometimes go out of his way to make you see it as your own fault rather than his. |

Personal History
Personal History | Cadet Lauren E. Hickory was born 2367 on the planet of Sigma Iotia II, in the Latinum district. His mother was half Romulan though his biological father, James Hickory was fully Iotian. however, their relationship lasted only a couple of years as James Hickory was killed. This left, Savera widow and in need of financial support in her life. It took her a few years, but she caught the eyes and lobes of Murt, an extremely wealthy Ferengi businessmen who owned several bars and establishments in the Latinum district, an area with a significant Ferengi population. Murt was actually a decent step father for Lauren albeit raising the child with Ferengi principles. When Lauren was a teenager, his mother and stepfather split, but Savera had no interest in taking care of her son and in a divorce settlement signed full custody of her son over to Murt who continued to raise Lauren as though the teenager was a Ferengi. Murt looked past the kid's small lobes and saw potential in him. By the time he was fifteen, Lauren could practically state a hundred or so rules from the Rules of Acquisition. Murt had intended to eventually give his stepson all of his Empire, all the casinos and all of the resorts, but Lauren had plans of his own. He had wanted to leave home, to see the stars and be among them. What was more disconcerting for Murt was that his son had desires to go down a more 'Hu-mon' path and apply for Starfleet Academy. Though Murt did not agree with his son's choices, Murt did not stand in the young man's way. Instead, he offered him encouragement to follow his dreams, but to always keep his eyes on the latinum. Managing to score well enough on the initial entrance examinations, Lauren was admitted into Starfleet Academy where he majored in Security and minored in Archaeology. Though it was a bit of a hodgepodge academic selection, it would provide Lauren with some interesting knowledge and set of skills over the years. |

Service Chronology | ▪ 2388-xxxx: USS Arizona - Yeoman/Under Officer - Cadet Senior Year |
|
Service Record | While at Starfleet Academy, Cadet Hickory has gained the knowledge and training to be an excellent security officer some day. Though he came into the academy with a history of knowing about and personally handling weapons since his teenage years. It was something his stepfather was not afraid to teach him from an early age, especially on a planet as dangerous as Sigma Iotia and growing up in the very risque Latinum district. Though the sciences in general were of no interest to Cadet Hickory, Archaeology is the one exception. He learned quite a bit from declaring it as his minor and taking several courses on it over the years. It taught him how to mountain/rock climb as well as encourage an interest in spelunking. Of course being Ferengi at heart, the thought of finding prized artifacts and selling them for bars upon bars of gold pressed latinum had earned him the nickname 'Gold Digger' and 'Dirt Diver' by his fellow Cadets, especially the Science majors who were not to found of his ulterior views and motives. A member of Starfleet Academy's boxing team, Cadet Hickory has proven himself quite the competitor in the ring, earning himself several trophies and the top prize in a few tournaments. This lead to his teammates referring to him as 'Golden Boy' on account he brings home the gold. Growing up on a usual Ferengi diet which included grubs and tube worms, Hickory's 'cast iron' stomach allowed him to more than excel in survivalist training. Truth be told, he much rather scrounge around for some worms, beetles, and grubs than eat some Starfleet food rations. In his Senior Year, Cadet Hickory was assigned to the USS Arizona for a 'cadet cruise,' coming aboard as an 'Under Officer' with a background in Security. However, he was handed additional duties and responsibilities by veteran Captain, Nathan Cowell to help reinforce responsibility and discipline. Cadet Hickory was made the Captain's Yeoman for the duration of Hickory's academic year aboard the USS Arizona. |
