Personality & Traits
General Overview | Shelby is the epitome of the phrase “appearances can be deceptive”. Her petite frame and emotional eyes may make her look small and fragile but she is anything but. Strong willed with a feisty temper, this young woman takes after her father and is full of emotion and deceptively strong. Fiercely loyal to family, friends and colleagues alike, Shelby is the kind of woman anyone would want on side in an argument or even in the middle of a brawl. Despite all she has been through, the last surviving member of the Adams clan does have a funny side and loves to socialise when off duty. On duty, Commander Adams throws herself into her work, with piloting and most recently command becoming her passion. A highly qualified pilot, she does not care whether she is at the helm of a small shuttle or a super-sized starship or whether commanding an away team or an entire mission, the same quality of work can be expected from the daughter of the famed Admiral Thomas Adams.
Strengths | A talented pilot, Shelby has flown her way out of many sticky situations during the Dominion war. She is able to think out of the box to formulate tactical manoeuvres and plan escape strategies. She has developed a flair for administrative tasks during her time on Deep Space 10.
Weaknesses | Her temper can also lead to some troublesome situations. The Commander knows she has flaws and her lack of scientific and medical related experience are among them but is something she plans to work on during her new assignment.
Hobbies & Interests | Shelby’s sole ambition in life is to carry on the Adams family legacy after the disappearance of her father and the death of her mother during the Dominion War. This includes the chance to one day carry on the family name by having her own children. For now, she hopes to begin her own legacy. When not at the helm of a Starship or Shuttlecraft, Nicole has been known to be either propping up the bar or delving into the holodecks to relax on some far flung desirable paradise. Spending time with friends is her ideal way to unwind. However, since being informed of her transfer to the Arizona, Shelby has slowly become obsessed with locating her missing father. Since then, she has spent more and more of her time reviewing the last sensor data from the Raeya Sector – the last known location of the Miranda-B and Admiral Adams. |
Personal History
Personal History | In the year 2352, Lieutenant Thomas Adams and Lieutenant Ana Jarret became the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl they named Shelby. Whilst Ana stayed at home to bring up the couples child, the Cardassian Border War threatened the Alpha Quadrant and saw Thomas travel to the front and serve in most of the major engagements throughout the conflict. By the time Shelby was five in 2357, she had only seen her father four times. Not only did her relationship with her father suffer, but her mums relationship with him did too. In 2378 came the final straw as Ana finally had enough and left her estranged partner, taking Shelby with her on assignment. In 2361, for the first time in three years, Shelby saw her father again, this time, the newly minted Lt Commander Adams was on the verge of completing command school. The meeting was tense, with the relationship between father and daughter having suffered greatly with the absence of her father over the previous years, so much so that when she left Starbase 565 (the meeting place), at just 9 years of age, Shelby told her father she wanted nothing more to do with him. For a child educated on a Starship, she was very well versed on life and with her mother, the youngster plotted her future. Shortly afterwards, Starfleet was rocked by news of an attack on a Federation colony at Setlik III. The Cardassian's had attacked the colony under the belief that it was a staging ground for an attack on Cardassian territory when in reality it was simply a home to civilians. The attack sparked massive protests against the Cardassian's and calls for all out war. During a two year lull in the conflict, Starfleet began beefing up defenses and increasing the number of Starships at its disposal. It was during the early months of 2363 that Shelby learnt that her father had been given command of the U.S.S Miranda, assigned very close to the Cardassian Border. At the same time, Starfleet moral was boosted by news that a new Starship Enterprise had been commissioned and would soon be among the stars. For Shelby, she made it her ambition to one day serve on the Enterprise but, at just 11 years of age she still had some way to go. It was during 2384 that the Enterprise was launched and Starfleet began to explore wider reaches. Many children, just like Shelby, were encouraged to give themselves to Starfleet when of age and the young Adams daughter was happy to do so. Working hard in her studies, the youngster set her sights on a career in the Fleet. Elsewhere, the USS Miranda and Commander Thomas Adams were assigned to sector 611 with the ship participating in a number of important events in the sector by maintaining the peace with the nearby aggressive Federation neighbors. But then the Romulans returned. With the Romulan Empire once again considered to be a threat, Starfleet began transferring ships to the Romulan Border in order to combat any future hostilities. |
Prof. History
Service Record | As Shelby had grown up on Starships from before the age of 5, it was only natural that she submit her application to join Starfleet in 2368 at the age of 16. Whilst her mother, disheartened by recent events including the Borg attack on the Federation, warned her against enlisting, news that her father had become somewhat of a hero during the rescuing of survivors from Wolf 359, Shelby was determined to join the Fleet. Her application was successful and she started her studies in the summer of '68. But as her enthusiasm for her new career is at its highest, the Federation becomes involved in the Klingon Civil War and almost comes to blows with the Romulan Star Empire. Cadet Adams slowly began to consider if her mother was right – was the Federation a war mongering society that couldn't resist getting involved in other people's affairs? With the Starfleet reeling from the news of the loss of the Enterprise, the Board of Administrators at Starfleet Academy decided to help boost moral by assigning all Cadets (regardless of year) to Starfleet vessels in and around Sol in an effort to boost the number of personnel in the fleet and get the Cadets prepared for the realities of what was to come. Cadet Adams, deep into her studies in 2370, was shocked when news reached Earth of the destruction of the USS Odyssey in the Gamma Quadrant with the Dominion responsible. Aboard the Odyssey had been her mother. When some Cadets are given a chance to leave the Academy and continue training aboard Starships, she applied but was ultimately unsuccessful. Unbeknownst to her, the Commandant of the Academy had personally denied her application in fear of the Cadet embarking on a revenge mission. In 2372, Shelby Adams finally graduated from Starfleet command and was assigned to the USS Pittsburgh, part of the fifth fleet near Vulcan. The Pittsburgh was soon reassigned however upon the outbreak of the brief, yet brutal Federation-Klingon war. As the Pittsburgh was re-assigned to DS9, so too was the USS Miranda. Biting the bullet, Ensign Adams made contact with her father in an effort to re-establish relations between them. The two keep in contact for several months with Captain Adams happy to again be in contact with his daughter and proud of her achievements. When the Miranda was re-assigned in late 2372 following the outbreak of the Dominion War, the two said an emotional good bye at DS9 before Captain Adams departed for Starbase 565. Months later, the Pittsburgh received word that Captain Adams had led a Battle Group against the Dominion with the Miranda and several other vessels engaged in combat, allowing several civilian transports to flee the area around Starbase 565. The remnants of the Battle Group had retreated to DS9, bringing news that contact had been lost with Captain Adams, the Miranda and Starbase 565 with all presumed lost. Shelby, now the only surviving member of the Adams family, was distraught at the news that she was now alone and began to go off the rails. Drinking excessively, becoming promiscuous with men and turning up late for duty, Ensign Adams was in danger of being thrown out of Starfleet. However, in a bid to get the promising youngster back on track, the Pittsburgh’s commander promoted Adams to Lieutenant JG and transferred her to the Akira class USS Kensington as Chief Flight Controller on the proviso that she visited a Counsellor regularly. The Kensington was involved in several engagements throughout late 2374 and early 2375. Determined to go on the offensive following several demoralising defeats, Starfleet forces captured the Chin'toka system only to lose it again months later. But with a Cardassian rebellion going strong and threatening the Dominion stranglehold, the Federation Alliance pushed on and eventually, the Alliance succeeded in ending the war at the Battle of Cardassia. During the battle, the USS Kensington was heavily involved and destroyed over ten Cardassian and Dominion vessels before the cardassian's opted to switch sides. As the Dominion retreated to Orbit of Cardassia, the Kensington joined the allied fleet and engaged their enemies. After hours of fighting and with well over thirty percent of the allied fleet lost, the Dominion surrendered and war was at last over. Following the signing of the Treaty of Bajor several days later, the Kensington was one of several dozen Starships that remained in Cardassian space as an Occupation force. She searched for survivors and rendered aide and assistance on Cardassia itself. For Lieutenant Adams, the war had been costly and had left her without a family but the one thing she did have was a renewed sense of purpose. She would wait until she was in a position of authority and would then try to investigate the loss of her father. For her service to the Kensington, Shelby was promoted to Lieutenant and her career was well and truely back on track. With the rebuilding effort getting underway within Cardassian space and several new Re-Exploration Initiatives created to explore far off territories, Shelby was transferred to Starfleet Command for command training in late 2378. After eight months of intensive training, the last remaining member of the Adams clan returned to the Kensington to replace the outgoing Executive Officer. With the ship ordered to patrol the outskirts of the Chin'toka system, Shelby simply waited for the right time to follow her father’s example and enter the command track. After a number of years as the Kensington’s XO and a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, a chance meeting at Starfleet Command gave Shelby the chance to showcase her command talents under the tutelage of Admiral Thalek th'Zorati (and later Admiral James Ryan) as Director of Personnel for the entire Task Force. Stationed on Deep Space 10, the Commander took control of all troop and personnel deployments and was instrumental in assigning new commanding officers to vessels upon the outbreak of the Cardassian-Romulan War. |
